Follow the sheep trails…
Start Time: 18:30
Distance: 8km
Climbing: 110m
Challenge of the Day: The first 1.5 km ascent — sunset run to the summit of the koppie.
Prepare: Running lights, warm clothing.
Route: With the ring of the bell, you head towards a slow gratifying ascent up the koppie as the last remnants of the day start fading, revealing the final glimpses of Renosterberg in the backdrop. A rolling gravel road darkens slowly, lit only by the soft trot of runners with headlamps as the route leads you to a big beautiful dam, which at night becomes a glistening mirror to the stars above. The road gently leads home through a majestic section of the poplar tree forest and ends alongside the 200-year-old stone walls — a one-of-a-kind night run in the Karoo.
Start Time: 08:00
Distance: 14km
Climbing: 220m
Challenge of the Day: Brisk 600 m ascent along the 200-year-old stone wall koppie camp after waterpoint 2.
Prepare: 1.0 – 2.0 hour run.
Route: Your 14 km journey begins with a slow winding section through the magical poplar forest. It then flows onto a rolling jeep track through many of the Dwarsvlei farm paddocks — home to fat fluffy sheep and vocal cows. The route carries on through an old road culvert towards a coffee-lover’s dream pit stop: Atlantic Coffee at the first water point. Don’t forget a quick pic on the famous couch at the Dwarsvlei siding sign!
Freshly caffeinated, you’ll see Renosterberg in the background and curious wildlife like springbuck and slow-moving tortoises. A long smooth section of single track follows, then a second waterpoint before tackling the 200-year-old stone wall koppie. Heading downhill, you pass through the poplar forest and across a beautiful old bridge, leading home to friendly staff and your handmade souvenir finisher’s medal.
Start Time: 07:30
Distance: 22km
Climbing: 350m
Challenge of the Day: 3 km of trekking up Renosterberg.
Prepare: 2.0 – 3.5 hour run.
Route: The 22 km route offers the best views — starting beside the 100-year-old Nourse shed and winding through the poplar forest. The jeep track leads under a road culvert to the Java-friendly waterpoint and selfie zone. After a cappuccino and a quick pose on the Dwarsvlei couch, runners ascend a graded jeep track along Renosterberg with breathtaking Karoo vistas. At the summit, refill your bottles at a self-help waterpoint, then enjoy a rewarding downhill. Another pit stop awaits at the old Dwarsvlei siding before striding along unused train tracks toward your final culvert crossing.
A long section of flowing single track guides you through the veld, past the last waterpoint, and up the 200-year-old stone wall koppie one final time. Flowing down homebound, you re-enter the poplar forest, cross a vintage bridge, and finish near the Dwarsvlei guest farm — where your well-earned finisher medal awaits.
